Sajid Hussain, a senior journalist and the founding editor of the Balochistan Times, was on Friday (today) laid to rest in his hometown of Nizrabad in Kech, Balochistan. He had gone missing in Sweden on March 2 this year and his body was found in a river in Uppsala on April 23. He was 39.
His family received his body, sent from Sweden to Karachi, in the early hours of Friday.
Hussain left Pakistan in 2012 due to threats to his life and was granted protection in Sweden last year. Hussain was a senior journalist and wrote about the abduction of activists, the drug trade in Balochistan and the plight of the Baloch people in Pakistan. His work often got him into trouble as the authorities did not like his reporting of Balochistan’s forbidden stories, the reason he had to leave and live in exile.
The Swedish police have maintained that their investigation did not suggest any foul play in his death, but his family is still waiting for the autopsy results and the police investigation report to be released.
